march 16: UPDATE

Hi everyone.  I hope you are enjoying the rain at home this morning.  As you know by now, our school is closed for the next few weeks-- at least-- so that we can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.  This is an important step; I am continuing to collect information to share, and I will update the coronavirus/COVID-19 page on the blog as I learn more.  For now, I'm glad that government and school officials collaborated with medical experts to support the health of our community.

Although I'll miss seeing you in person, we have what we need to continue learning, communicating, and collaborating online.  Starting tonight (March 16), I will post the following day's agenda by 10:00 P.M. I'm a little disappointed that we didn't know about the closure on Friday -- I would have had you take your journals home instead of turning them in -- but you can start a new notebook or write on paper.

This is the agenda I posted yesterday before I learned school would be closed. My intention was to have a conversation in class about how we can sustain our momentum and use our time to the greatest advantage while school is closed.  I have a few ideas (naturally :), and I want to make space for yours as well.

To make things a bit easier for today, and to bring us together on a day we weren't expecting to spend apart, please answer the journal question in a comment to this post. (As always, please copy your comment to your clipboard before you click 'Publish' so that if it glitches, you can paste in an email to me and I'll publish for you.)

I will publish more about our "new normal" later today, once I see some of your comments.  Thanks to those of you who sent emails, please feel free to reach out anytime on any of our channels.  I am confident that we can navigate this together.  Someday you'll have a great story to tell when your grandchildren ask you what you did during the Pandemic of 2020 (and when you do tell that story, describe me nicely. Maybe taller. 😜).  Mahalo. -dp

  1. I think that at first this isn't going to be easy for any of us since we are so used to going to school and only having some things to do online, but also I believe that it can benefit us since we will have an idea on how online classes work and it won't be difficult when we go off to college.

  2. I believe that as long as we communicate we will be able to work through this.I know that it could be challenging, but that's okay because I know that all of us are capable of doing our work online.I think that you should just post the agenda and we should do our work and turn them in on blogger.

  3. The coronavirus shouldn't be a reason for us to stop learning. Even if it isn't the requirements and the actual curriculars we should be learning in school, it could at least be something. Even if its something small like learning how to properly wash our hands. I know not a lot of people are actually going to like the idea of having to do things online but it will benefit us when coming back to school, because we wont be that much out of routine, and like Yazmin said it wont make it as difficult when going to college because a lot of professors do have online assignments.

  4. Continuing what we usually do in this course should work out fine. As a class, we're already accustomed to the work since all of it is done online. It was pretty upsetting to find out school would be cancelled on Monday and Tuesday since those were the only days where information could be given to us (in person) and the time I could say bye to everyone. Not everyone is on the same page due to the urgent news. However, throughout the day I've received emails from teachers so I'm glad that I have access to that type of communication. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

  5. In a way I believe it's going to be difficult to learn online since some may not have access to the internet at home and because some students simply cannot learn through a screen. However, we have it easier than other classes because we usually turn in our work through our blogs. Finding out that school was cancelled did upset me because I do somewhat enjoy school and I like to be out of my house and if I have something to do during the week then it'll keep me from being bored all day.

  6. In my perspective, at first it will be challenging to earn online since we are so used to in person communication. However,I am confident i our abilities as students to be able to adapt quite quickly. Weirdly, I am saddened that school has been cancelled for the rest of the month because I felt that I had just got caught up with all my classes in n understanding level. All in all, this new way of learning will be tough but it is not impossible.

  7. COVID-19 has uprooted the last part of our junior year so far I don't believe that we should let it ruin our education. As long as we are determined and resilient we can get through this. We can do this by sticking with our everyday schedules as best as we can and using platforms like canvas, onenote, and blogger.

  8. Through all of what we're going through, not just individually but as a class, I think it will be hard at first for us to navigate through this because we are all used to being able to communicate in person and collaborate altogether. I think just managing like this where we communicate online and with Blogger like we usually do, we'll be fine. We can't keep letting valuable things be taken away from us because we can't attend school. It's best that we try and adapt to this new change for now and get familiar with it because it will be going on for quite awhile.

  9. I think that doing our classwork from home is going to be a challenge in the beginning. This is the first time I've done this and it doesn't feel the same as it would if I were in a classroom. But you know what it is what it is. Although it might be tough in the beginning I sure that we'll be able to get the work done and still learn.

  10. I'm not sure how this is going to work at first but I feel like things are going to be a little challenging at first. After a couple of days, I think things will be alright and we should be able to do our work.

  11. There are many challenges and success in life. However, we should learn to adapt to this way of life instead of complaining or making excuses. Looking back and reflecting, there are other areas in the world where they are having to live in worse conditions. Yes, we will have to give up socializing in person and the qualities we develop at school such as teamwork, interacting, our being outspoken. Personally, I’m saddened by the thought that I’m not able to take part, as it is canceled, in other activities I had as planned. However, some positivities we can see are that schools are still providing free lunch for those who are signed up; we get to have one hour more of time to study, etc, go to the bathroom more often (adding up the 10 minutes of each passing period and more - the time you spent to walk/ drive to school). I feel like this is one way everyone will become more responsible as they have chores/ to- do’s at home and homework without being told or reminded everyday.

  12. I know I'm late but I wanted to share my journal on here as well. How is this going to work? This has been a question I was asking myself even before we left school. Personally I know online learning for me is a bit harder since I'm not in a classroom to focus myself but I know that for this to work, I need to get use to self-learning because in the end this is honestly a skill we need to be able to use in the future.

  13. (late comment, my bad) I think this is going to work just alright. The Pandemic of 2020 is definitely one for the books. I honestly don't like this, I feel bombareded with all the work I have been getting from most of my teacher. I understand I don't have to do it all in one day, but it's overwhelming. I really don't like being online alot, but it's fine. I never ever imagined finding myself missing school. Since technology has been advancing of course we'll have to get used to this sometime in the future. I'm looking forward to this challenge though.
