On Tuesday, November 12, we will have an in-class essay. You will
use cutting edge, ancient Egyptian technology (blue or black ink on
paper) to write a multi-paragraph response to a prompt.
The prompt itself, as I'm thinking about it today, will likely have something to do with this quote from
In the words of Frederick Douglass (a leader of the abolitionist movement and a contemporary of Emerson):
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring
the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own
abhorrence.”
In a well-crafted essay of no
fewer than three paragraphs, please explain how this statement reflects
the ideas that Emerson wrote about in "On Self-Reliance." How can any
of these ideas help you as you navigate life in 2019?
Please
remember that you are writing to create value through understanding, so
write as if you are teaching your reader something that you consider
meaningful. Please structure your essay accordingly, and proofread for
mechanics (spelling, grammar, etc.).
You will need at least three ideas and/or
quotes from "On Self-Reliance" to help you answer the prompt. During
the essay, you will not have access to your electronic devices or your
journal. However, if you bring one page of outlined notes, you may keep
that page on your desk as a reference while you write.
More
on this over the weekend. If at least 10 people comment to this post
with their perspectives on what is important about "On Self-Reliance," I
will post the prompt on Monday. If 20 people comment, I will post the
prompt on Sunday. If 30 people comment, I will post the comment
tomorrow (Saturday). If everyone in class comments today, I will start writing
immediately.

I believe what can be taken away from "On Self-Reliance" is to be able to be proud of thy voice of which speaks from within, for to do naught but lie to one's self is naught hearty, moreover cruel to their heart, to their soul, and to their mind. Speak for thyself, speak for what it means to speak, and you shall speak for what is to be spoken, for what speaking as is meant to be. etc. etc.

ReplyDeleteThe three ideas I took from "On Self Reliance" were trusting yourself and not letting crowds push you though a road that isn't yours, don't rely on your memory and false prayers are our regrets.
ReplyDeleteThree ideas I've taken away from " On Self-Reliance" are people who are great are misunderstood, we cannot pass for anyone else but ourselves, and people's true actions now will make their actions valuable later in the future.
ReplyDeleteThree ideas that stood out to me from "On Self-Reliance" are that when life circumstances are changing, it doesn't mean we're changing too, the people around us are the ones who actually inspire us, and "To be great is to be misunderstood."
ReplyDeleteThere are many ideas that can be taken away from Emerson's essay. However the three important ideas that stood out to me from "On Self-Reliance" is that you shouldn't be someone you aren't, nothing can bring peace but yourself, and mistakes are bound to happen, so try and learn from them.
ReplyDeleteThree ideas ive taken from "On self-reliance" is that if you have an idea and someone doesn't understand its okay, if you have an idea and it isn't the same then its okay. Don't stick to your bad idea if you have a better one. Don't act like your good if your not good.
ReplyDeleteWhat I took from "On Self Reliance" was to live life the way you want to live it. You don't have to be the person society expects you to be. If we do become who we're "meant to be", our voice would be placed lower than those who chose to make a choice about who they wanted to be. We just have to 'Ne te quaesiveris extra'.
ReplyDeleteSelf-Reliance is more than just an essay they made hundreds of year ago but also a way of viewing things a different way.To me self-reliance is
ReplyDeletehow a person determined what they do in life and how someone does it.
Some main ideas that I have learned from "On Self-Reliance" is that we have our own voice to speak for ourselves and be who you want to be, have your ideas and share them and if people don't understand them then who cares?, people who earn are respect are the ones who don't ask for anything and blow us away. These main ideas are the ones that stood out to me most in Emerson's essay and has captured my attention.
ReplyDeleteWhat is important on "Self-Reliance":
ReplyDelete1. The belief in yourself is what is genius
2. Culture devalues individuality
3.Religion fears individual creativity
4. Education system makes us imitate rather than make our own things
5. Take the risk of speaking your mind and or truth whether in a good/bad time it will change and improve your self-regard
From "On Self-Reliance" the three ideas I picked up on were great people are misunderstood, pretending to be someone else you're just lying to yourself, and don't always depend on a memory.
ReplyDeleteEmerson's essay, "On Self-Reliance" evoked many feelings and thoughts but I think that three of the important ideas that can be easily understood are to be true to yourself, everything that happens to you and what you create can define you, and making mistakes is all part of nature- so learn from all of them.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose just three ideas from Emerson's essay I'd say I take:
ReplyDelete1) if you choose not to decide, you still made a choice
2) putting in effort into being someone you aren't takes away from becoming your own charachter (work on yourself don't copy others)
3) bad news is louder than good news (something important is never the main focus)
There are so many more good ideas to take from Emerson's essay, it is very difficult to just pick three.
The principal ideas from Emerson's essay are
ReplyDeletethat you will be pressured by others that think they know what you want and will try to make decisions for yourself. If you choose be someone else your not, you are eventually loose your true self over time. However, if you do become you, your true voice and actions might place you in a spot where you are ignored.
