another one

We're swimming in uncharted waters.  On one hand, I don't want you to have to focus on news that is negative or stressful when you have so many important things to think about.  I want to contribute to your well-being and I'm troubled about sharing this.

On the other hand: a) It's not like most of you haven't already heard; b) I can't see any point to burying our heads in the sand and acting like we don't have a massive crisis on our hands; and c) It is up to us to make ourselves safer and more secure.

About that last point.  I want to continue living (I could stop the sentence right there) in a community of caring people who recognize signs of distress and/or danger.  We can't depend on politicians or Second Amendment nutjobs (yes, I wrote it) to protect us.  Protests are important, and I am proud of the student activists I know -- but protests by themselves are not enough.  After Parkland, Saugus High School students walked out too.

If you ever find yourself or someone else dealing with issues you can't control, or if you have any cause for concern about your safety or ours, let's have the conversation.  Life's too short already.

News coverage about today's events here.

  1. This is so heartbreaking for multiple reasons, we have the fear of having our school shot up or that we are used to all these shootings. Another one? Another is the keyword, why is it another, when it shouldn't be. I have been following this shooting since it was first reported and it is insane. This 16-year-old shot up his school (all in 16 seconds) on his birthday, two were killed. It is sickening that the kid then shot himself in the head and was being hospitalized makes me mad. Why are you so sick in the head to do such a thing? And to just shoot yourself after? No matter how lost you are in life killing others will NEVER be the solution.

  2. It's devastating to see that there are still shootings happening in the US and there's nothing being done to put an end to this. We have been promised multiple times that new laws were going to be made but nothing has changed. I'm always wondering "how many more innocent people are going to die because guns are given to people who shouldn't be allowed to have one."

  3. I think its so crazy how cruel and predictable this world has become. There are so many shootings already going on and there is nothing done about it. Years ago we didn't have to have drills in order to know how to act in case of something like this. When I was watching this live on the news during 3rd period I felt heartbroken when they announced the death of a girl. I don't know what drives people so dam out of their mind to do this. They don't have a right to end someone else's life.

  4. Here we are again. It is simply saddening to see what society has become. A person my age decided to come to school and shoot five of his classmates. Doesn't this make you wonder what is going wrong in society? What are we doing wrong? And not to mention people are even finding humor in school shooting making "funny" memes and or jokes. It infuriates me. This all goes back to the talk about gun laws and simply having a gun in general. We obviously need a new leader and or individual who actually wants to make these shootings stop! But, no one has been successful so far. So, here we go again.

  5. This just in from Juan:
I Honestly think its sad to what this country has came to because school is a place for us to be safe and have our dream of being successful when we grow up but now we have to worry about going to school on a normal day and not die because of some white guy (they've mostly all been white so im not trying to be mean) to come and shoot up the school and may of us not be able to achieve our dream.

  6. It scares me now every day that when I come to school I have to be aware of a shooting on campus. Now every morning my mom tells me to be extremely careful. Its even more devastating that the people who want to make a change to this problem in society aren't given the power to do so. While those who do have the authority to help make our schools a safe place once again have failed miserably at their job.

  7. I heard about the news while I was doing my homework. My mom had decided not to tell me because she didn't want to scare me. It's horrible. With situations like this happening even more now during these times, I can't help but fear school everyday thinking that today something horrible might happen. Many people blame it on mental illnesses, but have people ever thought of thinking that maybe this happens because of the easy access to weapons now? This just goes to show that gun laws need to be revised.

  8. It’s deeply saddening that something like this has happened again. Receiving news that a shooting has occurred happens quite frequently and I wish it wasn’t like that. It’s even alarming how there’s “active shooter drills” at schools ever since the Parkland shooting. I suppose it’s good to be cautious and know what to do if something like it were to happen. Similarities between the shootings that have occurred in the past years is that the blame is put on having mental illnesses. As time continues to pass, the mental being of people in our society continues to grow worse. However, the access to guns should be considered. There’s always conflict between banning guns and having a stricter policy to get them. Yes an amendment allows everyone the right to keep and bear arms, but it has become out of control.
